Many Omani business owners run their invoicing in Excel. It's familiar, it's free, and it works — until it doesn't.
What Excel does well
- You already know it
- Fully customisable
- Works offline
- Free (if you have Microsoft 365)
Where Excel breaks down for invoicing
Manual everything. Every invoice number, date, total, and VAT calculation is manual. One mistake and your records don't balance.
No payment tracking. Excel has no idea if a client paid or not. You have to update it manually — and forget once.
No client portal. Clients can't view or pay invoices directly. You email a PDF, they print it, write a cheque, and you wait.
VAT errors. Excel doesn't know Oman VAT rules. If you apply the wrong rate to an exempt item, you won't find out until OTA audits you.
No backup. Your Excel file lives on your laptop. A crash, theft, or accidental delete wipes years of records.
